## Card text

**Shift** 5 (You may pay 5 {ink} to play this on top of one of your characters named Dr. Facilier.) Into the Shadows Whenever one of your other characters is banished in a challenge, you may return that card to your hand.

## Keyword rulings

### Shift (rule 8.10)

#### 8.10 Shift

##### 8.10.1

The Shift keyword represents a static ability of paying an alternate cost to play a character instead of paying the character’s ink cost. Shift means “If you have a card in play with the same name as this card, you may play this character by paying their Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of another character you have in play with the same name.” This is called shifting.

##### 8.10.2

If a shifted character is put on top of an exerted card, the shifted character enters play exerted.

##### 8.10.3

If an effect on a shifted character causes it to enter play exerted, it becomes exerted as it enters play, even if the card it was on top of is ready.

##### 8.10.4

If a shifted character is put on top of a dry character, the shifted character enters play dry. If a shifted character is put on top of a drying character, the shifted character enters play drying.

###### 8.10.4.1

If a shifted character is put on top of a non-character, the shifted character is considered dry if it was placed on a card that has been in play since the beginning of its player’s turn. Otherwise, the shifted character is drying.

###### 8.10.4.2

If a character with Duo Shift or Combo Shift is put on top of both a dry character and a drying character, the shifted character is considered drying. If a character with Duo Shift or Combo Shift is put on top of both a ready character and an exerted character, the shifted character is considered exerted.

##### 8.10.5

A player can use a shifted character to perform all turn actions of the character it was put on top of. The shifted character doesn’t gain the text of the character it’s put on top of (e.g., an activated ability), but it does keep any effects that apply to that character when the shifted character enters play. A player can exert a shifted character to sing a song if the character it was put on top of was dry when the shifted character entered play.

##### 8.10.6

A shifted character retains whatever damage is on the character it’s put on top of.

##### 8.10.7

When a shifted character leaves play, all cards in its stack (i.e., all cards under it) move to the same zone as the shifted character card does, and the cards are no longer considered to be in a stack (see 5.1.1.7).

##### 8.10.8

The Shift keyword has six variants: [Classification] Shift, Universal Shift, Duo Shift, Combo Shift, Temporary Shift, and Potato Shift. These variant keywords are Shift abilities and follow all rules for the Shift keyword with the following exceptions.

###### 8.10.8.1

[Classification] Shift means “If you have a character in play with the [Classification] specified by this ability, you may play this character by paying their [Classification] Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of another character you have in play with the specified classification.”

###### 8.10.8.2

Universal Shift means, “If you have a character in play, you may play this character by paying their Universal Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of another character you have in play.”

###### 8.10.8.3

Duo Shift means “If you have two characters in play that each match one of the names on this card, you may play this character by paying their Duo Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of the two characters that each share one of the names of this character.” Stack the two cards under the Duo Shift card in any order.

###### 8.10.8.4

Combo Shift represents two separate Shift abilities on the same card: Shift and Duo Shift. Combo Shift means “If you have a character in play with the same name as this card, you may play this character by paying their Combo Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of a character you have in play that shares one of the names on this card or put this card on top of two characters you have in play that each share one of the names on this card.” If you put a Combo Shift card on top of two cards, stack them in any order under the Combo Shift card.

###### 8.10.8.5

Temporary Shift represents a Shift ability that creates a delayed triggered ability. Temporary Shift means “If you have a character in play with the same name as this card, you may play this character by paying their Temporary Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of another character you have in play with the same name. At the end of your turn, if this card is in play, remove all damage from it and return only that card to your hand.”

###### 8.10.8.6

Potato Shift means “If you have an item in play named Potato, you may play this character by paying their Potato Shift cost instead of their ink cost. If you do, put this card on top of an item you have in play named Potato.” If the character is put on top of an item named Potato and that item has been in play since the beginning of its player’s turn, then the character enters dry. Otherwise, the character enters drying.

##### 8.10.9

If a card has two or more Shift variants combined into a single ability, all conditions of those variants must be fulfilled to use that shift ability. Example: Sun Yee – Red Panda Spirit has the shift ability Temporary Red Panda Shift. Both the Temporary Shift variant and the [Classification] Shift variant are combined into a single ability, meaning she has the ability to shift onto a character in play that has the Red Panda classification as well as having the delayed triggered ability of returning to her player’s hand at the end of the turn if she’s still in play.
